Randolph Peter Best was born in Madras, India on 24^th November 1941 to John and Mona Best. Rory Best was then born in 1944 and the family came to Liverpool at Christmas 1945, and first lived with John Best’s family at Ellerslie Manor, but there was tension between Mona and John’s family, so they moved out and set up in a flat in Cases Street.

However, when they discovered it was possibly haunted, they moved out to a little 1-storey, brick and corrugated iron house in Princess Drive. This wasn’t satisfactory, so they moved to a nice 3-bedroom, semi-detached house at 17, Queenscourt Road. When Mo’s parents retired from India they came to live with John, Mo, Pete and younger brother Rory. The house was cramped. Mo wanted a big house, but her husband didn’t. Eventually, Rory saw a house up for sale at 8, Hayman’s Green. Mo eventually bought it and turned the basement into The Casbah Coffee Club (left).

Pete went to school at Blackmoor School and then onto The Collegiate School where he made friends with Bill Barlow and Chas Newby, with whom he would later form the Black Jacks.

After Ken Brown left the Quarrymen over money, he asked Pete to start a band with him as a drummer. Pete said yes, but needed drums! So, Mo bought him a new set of drums, and Pete, Ken, Bill and Chas formed the Black Jacks. He was drumming with them at the Casbah when he was approached by Paul McCartney to join the Beatles to go to Hamburg, which he did.
